Heartburn/acidity

Stomach acid entering the oesophagus causes acid reflux (acidity), which results in heartburn, a burning sensation in the chest. in the chest. Heartburn affects 8–10% of Indians weekly.Heartburn is caused by a malfunctioning lower esophageal sphincter (LES), a muscular ring that separates the stomach from the oesophagus. After eating, the LES shuts to prevent stomach acid from entering the oesophagus. When the LES relaxes, stomach acid may flow back into the oesophagus, causing heartburn.Food and alcohol may also cause heartburn. Fatty or spicy meals, coffee, alcohol, and chocolate are common triggers. Smoking, obesity, eating big meals, and reclining down after eating may all cause heartburn.
Heartburn (acidity) symptoms:
  1. Chest pain, usually beneath the breastbone
  2. Sour mouth/throat
  3. Food or liquid regurgitation
  4. Swallowing issues
  5. Throat lump
  6. Sore throat/hoarseness
  7. Nighttime coughing or wheezing

Stomach acid refluxing into the oesophagus causes discomfort and irritation. After big or high-fat meals, lying down or leaning over might increase heartburn.
Several complications can arise from heartburn if it is left untreated or poorly managed.
  1. Esophagitis: esophageal lining inflammation or irritation that may cause bleeding, ulcers, and narrowing.
  2. Barrett's oesophagus: abnormal cells in the lining of the oesophagus increase the chance of cancer.
  3. Stricture: frequent acid exposure scars the oesophagus, making swallowing difficult.
  4. Respiratory problems: stomach acid that backs up into the throat and lungs can cause coughing, wheezing, and pneumonia.
  5. Dental issues: gastric acid erosion may cause tooth damage and gum disease.
If you have frequent or severe heartburn, consult a doctor to determine and treat the cause.
Ayurveda says that heartburn happens when the Pitta dosha, which controls digestion and metabolism, is out of balance. Neurotherapy treats heartburn by balancing Pitta and promoting digestion. Peristalsis is also stimulated.
